Professional Bio

Kelly Sweeney studies mixed-media social interactions, which integrates traditional interpersonal and computer-mediated communication research. She examines how technology influences interpersonal communication and relationship development, specifically within the context of online dating and social support. Kelly received her MA from the University of Delaware in 2019, where she studied interpersonal communication. Her current research projects investigate how people in mixed-media relationships switch communication channels to establish, build, and maintain personal relationships. At Penn State, Kelly has taught multiple sections of Interpersonal Communication (CAS 203) and Effective Speech (CAS 100A). Further, she has served as a TA for Communication and Information Technologies (CAS 283) and Supervised Experience in College Teaching (CAS 602). Recently, she served as the Assistant Course Director for CAS 100, which involves assisting in course management and conducting the bi-annual CAS Civic Engagement Public Speaking Contest. In 2021-2022, Kelly was awarded the Kathryn DeBoer Award for Excellence in Teaching by a Graduate Student in the Communication Arts and Sciences department at Penn State.
