Professional Bio

Harrison’s main research interest revolves around “Race” and its utilization as an interpretive lens for experiences in the United States. More specifically, he focuses on how “Blackness” integrates or dis-integrates universalist concepts like “human,” “equality,” or “class,” and how this tension is navigated in communicative practices. The unstable nature of this area of investigation is evident in the topics of his work, ranging from analyzing the affective nexus of the George Floyd protesters, to taking a rather serious stance towards the small, “innocuous” racial kitsch objects of the American South known as negrobilia. He is also interested in how masculinity is understood and performed within Black communities, especially in relation to artistic expressions such as hip hop and battle rap.
