Professional Bio
Talia Kibsey is a dual-title doctoral student, pursuing degrees in both Communication Arts and Sciences, and Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies. Talia's research bridges interdisciplinary cultural criticism with rhetorical theory and postcolonial feminist methodologies, focusing on disability, madness, neurodivergence, and stigma in popular discourse. Their current work looks at the rhetorical construction of femme madness (hysteria) in/by Western capitalist society.
A passionate educator, Talia finds joy in merging their research interests with teaching, exploring and amplifying modes of storytelling for disabled and gender-diverse individuals in both popular culture and countercultures. Their work has been published in Communication Teacher (Taylor & Francis, 2021).
Talia grew up and trained as a dancer in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada and holds a B.A. Honours in English from the University of Winnipeg. They moved to the United States in 2018 and earned an M.A. in Communication Studies from Florida Atlantic University before joining Penn State University as a Ph.D. student in 2022. A true Northerner, Talia’s heart beats for snow days, good poutine, and a walk in the woods.
