Professional Bio

Ruby Josephine Johnston is a Philadelphia native pursuing a Masters in Communication Arts and Sciences (potentially Dual Title in Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies or African American and Diaspora Studies). She has always been interested in studying the dynamics between race, gender, sexuality, and power in the United States. Her current aim is to understand how to better distribute rhetorical power in order to empower people in terms of race, gender, and sexuality. There are few individuals that have lived an experience similar to hers and have a claim to space in higher education. Without that claim to space, they do not have the access or power to have conversations in spaces that can facilitate tangible change. This is not a conversation that can be had unless students like Ruby are admitted into positions where they may begin to push the envelope.
