Professional Bio

Mary High teaches undergraduate courses in Communication Arts and Sciences. She joined the department in 2018 after teaching for six years in the Department of Communication Studies at The University of Iowa. She completed a Ph.D. at Penn State in 2009, and she earned a M.A. at Texas A&M University in 2003. Mary’s teaching experience includes a variety of courses in public speaking, organizational communication, rhetoric, and group communication. She has taught small honors seminars, large lecture courses, and classes conducted entirely online. In all of her courses, she aims to create a classroom environment in which students feel welcome to share their ideas, seek and receive helpful feedback, and engage course material with their own lives. As a teacher, her overarching goal is to help students become independent thinkers, critical consumers of messages, effective communicators, and lifelong learners.
