Professional Bio
Jeremy Engels is a communication ethicist who studies democracy’s past so that we can imagine new and better democratic futures. He is the author of The Ethics of Oneness: Emerson, Whitman, and the Bhagavad Gita (Chicago 2021), The Art of Gratitude (SUNY 2018), The Politics of Resentment: A Genealogy (2015), and Enemyship: Democracy and Counter-Revolution in the Early Republic (2010). For his work, he has been awarded the Karl Wallace Award and the New Investigator Award from the National Communication Association. Professor Engels teaches courses in communication and mindfulness (CAS 197), the rhetoric of war and peace (CAS 373), communication ethics (CAS 426W), and democratic theory (CAS 506). In recognition of his outstanding efforts in the classroom, he was awarded the Penn State College of the Liberal Arts Outstanding Tenure-Line Faculty Teaching Award in Spring 2017. Jeremy is also a trained yoga and meditation teacher (ERYT-500).
