Gender and Communication students participate in Douglass Day Transcribe-a-Thon

Students smile at the camera during the Douglass Day Transcribe-a-ThonOn February 14, the chosen birthday of Frederick Douglass, students in Dr. VanHaitsma’s gender and communication courses (CAS255 and 455) transcribed items from the recently digitized papers of lawyer, activist, and newspaper-founder Mary Ann Shadd Cary (1823-1893). Douglass Day was started by Mary Church Terrell in 1897, and the annual transcribe-a-thon aims to raise the profiles of lesser-known figures in Black history by making their archives more accessible. It is organized by students and faculty affiliated with Penn State’s Center for Black Digital Research.
