Debate Team Continued Successful Fall Competition Season

The Penn State Debate Team continued its successful fall competition season on November 2, 2024, during the NEDA Virtual Debate Tournament. The online event, sanctioned by the National Educational Debate Association, featured student competitors from seven different universities in five different states. Teams argued over reforming the presidential election process through five rounds of debate.

In the novice public forum division, the team of Asher Talty and Jia Arora finished in second place after winning four of their five debates. Talty and Arora are both first semester freshmen and were competing in their first collegiate debate tournament. Additionally, Arora was ranked the 2nd best individual speaker in the division, while Talty was ranked 4th.

Penn State was also represented by Kenisha Brown in the varsity public forum division. Brown, a senior communication arts and sciences major, took on the challenge of competing without a teammate.

The Penn State Debate Team is instructed by director of debate Tim Michaels and assistant coach Courtney Wright. Students interested in joining can contact Dr. Michaels at trm5449@psu.edu.
