This seminar focuses on theory, concepts, and empirical findings related to how and why interpersonal interactions and relationships contributes to people's mental, physical, and psychological well-being. Although the seminar will include readings and concepts from psychology and sociology, the majority of the readings and discussion will focus on the role of messages and relationships in promoting well-being. Class discussion will focus on positive interactions that boost well-being and unproductive interactions that damage well-being.
Course Objectives
- Gain an in-depth understanding of traditional and contemporary theories that apply to the study of interpersonal communication and well-being
- Familiarize yourself with the major trends and researchers involved in the study of how messages impact well-being
- Understand some factors that explain how, why, or when messages and relationships shape well-being
- Integrate principles, concepts, and theories to produce original research ideas
- Participate and converse with classmates about issues relevant to the study of interpersonal communication and well-being
