Theoretical Perspectives on Message Design and Behavior Change

CAS551 is a graduate level survey of classic and contemporary thinking on persuasive communication. The overarching goal of the course is to impart an understanding of the major issues and concerns in one of the oldest and most extensive literatures in social science. Students should leave the course with a broad understanding of the content and contours of the field as well as a set of strong empirical generalizations.

Course Objectives

  1. To provide an historically-grounded understanding of key concepts and theories of persuasion.
  2. To gain practice in the analysis of theories and the use of data to form empirical generalizations.
  3. To prepare students to implement persuasion concepts and measures in their own research.
