This course examines the relationship between culture and technology in the broadest sense, from the role of tools used in society to the impact of high technology in post-industrial societies. Particular attention will be given to how new technologies emerge, spread, and integrate into the fabric of everyday life, with an emphasis on contemporary digital systems and their relationship with social and cultural issues. Topics include artificial intelligence and generative AI, social media and algorithms, and communication technologies used in personal relationships. The course grapples with how technology shapes (and is shaped by) culture, while also addressing larger social concerns such as digital literacy, mis/disinformation, and surveillance. Further, questions of power, inequality, and ethics will be discussed, including how technologies are designed, who they serve, and their implications for sustainability, (dis)ability, and access. By the end of this course, students will be able to critically evaluate how technology and society/culture shape one another in modern life.
