Professional Bio

Lucas Youngvorst studies supportive communication and computer-mediated communication, with a particular interest in how communication technologies shape interpersonal interactions and relationships. More specifically, he examines how people seek, provide, and process supportive messages and why some supportive interactions are more effective than others. His research considers how technological affordances, relational dynamics, and individual differences influence supportive communication across face-to-face and mediated contexts. His current work focuses on how features and perceptions of communication channels shape support processes and outcomes, how mismatches between expected and received support affect relationships, and how verbal and nonverbal cues influence evaluations of supportive messages. His research has appeared in outlets such as Communication ResearchCommunication MonographsJournal of Social and Personal RelationshipsMedia Psychology, and Computers in Human Behavior. Professor Youngvorst teaches courses on communication and information technology, including Culture and Technology (CAS 383N), Communication and Information Technology I (CAS 283), and Communication and Information Technology II (CAS 483).
