PhD Student receives dissertation award from RGSO

PhD student Allison Neibauer has been selected to receive a dissertation award from the Research and Graduate Studies Office (RGSO) of the College of the Liberal Arts at Penn State. Allison's research rests at the intersection of memory studies, collective trauma, moral repair, and rhetorics of religion. In particular, she researches the rhetorical dimensions of harm and repair in the wake of communal tragedies. Her dissertation project, funded by the RGSO, investigates the impact of a widespread clergy sex abuse scandal in a local Catholic Diocese. She seeks to add both theoretical and practical value to the study of harm and repair by furthering our understanding of how communal narratives drive us to seek repair, redress, and vindication after tragedy. She does so through a mixed methodological approach that attempts to capture both the production of narratives and their reception. Recognizing the wake of devastation communal tragedies such as this one generate, Allison strives to offer stakeholders insight into the range of options that exist for repair.
