CAS Distinguished Professor awarded grant

Distinguished Professor John Gastil is the recipient of a National Science Foundation Grant to test a new model for cost-effective public involvement in government decisions over how to allocate resources to local communities. Local governments struggle to provide services and resources in an efficient and equitable manner. Dr. Gastil, in partnership with civic leaders in Lexington, Kentucky, will determine whether deliberative community engagement on resource allocation options changes how members of a community think about themselves, civic organizations, and government. Gastil and his partners hope to demonstrate an effective method for public consultation and engagement that is more responsive to the needs of underserved communities and increases the legitimacy of those governments for the affected communities.
