Alumni News: Associate Professor of CAS at Penn State Schuylkill

Valerie Schrader, Associate Professor of CAS at Penn State Schuylkill, recently stepped out of her role as honors coordinator on campus, a position she held since 2014, during which time she grew the program from about 15 students to more than 90.  Professor Schrader has accrued numerous honors, including the 2019 award for excellence in service from Penn State Schuylkill and the 2018 mid-career award from the Theatre, Film, and New Multi-Media Division of the National Communication Association. Currently, she has two forthcoming articles -- one on the musical Hadestown, and one co-authored with an undergraduate student on the musical Memphis – and essays in progress focused on public memory and presidential rhetoric.

Professor Schrader’s career in communication began at Penn State University Park when she discovered a passion for rhetoric. During her junior year, she became a member of Lambda Pi Eta and a Schreyer Honors College scholar. Her thesis was on religious rhetoric in presidential addresses, and it was directed by her mentor Dr. Chris Johnstone with committee members Dr. Thomas Benson and Dr. Stephen Browne. This foundation led to an MA and PhD from Ohio University and, ultimately, her career as Penn State faculty.
