The first survey was administered to 256 mothers of 6th grade students in the Harrisburg, Pa School District. The purposes of this first survey were to assess mother's satisfaction with how the Harrisburg School District satisfies their and their children's needs for programs, assess mother's involvement in their child's school life, and identify low income families receiving welfare and other forms of public assistance as well as those families who recently moved off welfare into the workforce.

The second survey was conducted with 94 mothers and one adolescent child (age range from 11-13) in families who, according to federal guidelines, live at poverty level. These interviews were conducted in person and separately with the mother and the child. The 2-hour face to face structured were conducted using two interviewers, one who interviewed the mother and another who interviewed the child. The interviews consisted of a Parent/Guardian Interview and a Youth Interview. The parent/guardian interview collected information on maternal work experiences, maternal support, maternal well being, and mother-youth relations. The youth interview collected information on youth well-being, youth identity and social involvement, mother-youth relations, youth self perception, youth problem behaviors, and what youth seem to value.

In about 10 percent of the families, we conducted what we call an ethnographic study where we closely examine the daily activities and how mothers and youth manage the day-to-day responsibilities of self, school, home, and low-wage work. Much of this information was collected by directly observing families and collecting videotaped observations of family activity and interactions. However, we did collect a daily reflection diary from each mother and youth who participated in this ethnography.

The interviews include some copyrighted measures that we cannot reproduce. We have listed the names of these measures, but have not include the contents of them, in the documents below.

We have provided the listing of scales used in the questionnaires in two formats (Adobe Acrobat and Word) for your convenience.
