Derek Lewis studies how material components of the world work in concert and contrast with symbolic aspects. He researches how investigating these features together, as co-productive of rhetorics, opens new and different ways of learning about rhetoric and its effects on audiences. Derek’s other research focus is on how film, particularly horror films, helps groups of people to make sense of and learn how to live with the events of the world at large and in their own homes. Currently, he is researching how popular horror films portray masculinity in vulnerable and fractured ways. Prior to coming to Penn State, Derek taught Public Speaking and assisted with Rhetoric and Western Thought and Gender and Communication courses.
