GRAD FORUM OFFICERS
In short, Grad Forum officers take on the tasks that help the graduate students as a collective. More specifically:
Grad Relations and Service Coordinator, currently held by: Hillary Jones; haj120@psu.edu
Act as a contact between incoming students and the department during the summer.
Send out the mailing (early summer) to provide incoming students with information about State College, and to help them find housing. Be available to meet with incoming students during the summer when they come to town, and to answer emails from them before. Organize "automatic friends" for incoming students for the fall. Help the graduate officer with recruiting at NCA. Coordinate annual service projects (blood drive, bell ringing/adopt-a-family, and any additional service projects that arise).
Technology Committee Representative, currently held by: Andy High; ach208@psu.edu
Maintain the Angel site and the grad student and alumnae listserv. Meeting periodically with the faculty technology committee, representing the technology needs of the graduate community. Interest and/or proficiency in issues concerning technology is a plus, but not a requirement.
Professional Development Chair, currently held by: Kirsten Weber; kmm464@psu.edu
Keeps an eye and ear out for job openings and posts them in the job binder in 316 and on Angel. Responsible for filing job search information in the appropriate binder in the office. Please and schedules at least one colloquium or similar activity (i.e. mock interviews) per semester that pertains professional development issues. Schedules a mock interview session with willing faculty. Posts notices of upcoming conferences and submission deadlines.
Intellectual Concerns, currently held by: Jessica Sheffield; jessicas@psu.edu
Assist the faculty who is in charge of planning colloquium events by sending out the weekly reminder, preparing the technology for the presentation (if necessary), and serving as a liaison between graduate students and the faculty regarding colloquium, among others. Presence at colloquium is a requirement for the position.
Social Chair, currently held by: Una Kimokeo-Goes; uhk100@psu.edu
Organize weekly social activities in conjunction with colloquium and others as needed. Help coordinate events for new graduate students in the fall. Organize beginning of the year barbeque and work with department staff in coordinating various events including the beginning of the year department meeting/breakfast, the TGIF party, and the end of the year awards ceremony.
Representative to the Advisory Committee, currently held by: Carla Fisher; clf196@psu.edu
Attend committee meetings and faculty meetings, report minutes of those meeting to grad forum as appropriate, assist committee in information-gathering, and provide committee with graduate student perspectives on items of discussion. (The Advisory Committee meets as needed to provide advice on issues to the Department Head).
Representative to the Graduate Committee, currently held by: Rachel McLaren; rmm301@psu.edu
Attend committee meetings and faculty meetings and report minutes of these meetings to grad forum as appropriate, assist committee in information-gathering, and provide committee with graduate student perspectives on items of discussion. (The Graduate Committee meets as needed to oversee our graduate program. Currently, those meetings are held Fridays prior to the faculty meetings).
Teaching Resources, currently held by: Alysa Lucas; a-lucas@psu.edu
Responsible for accumulating teaching resources (sample syllabi, assignments, grading sheets, activities) and organizing them in the Angel folders. Knowledgeable on issues of pedagogy and classroom management. May coordinate teaching mentors for all courses (not just 100A). Meet with department head and associate head concerning teaching issues and policies as necessary. Organize a teaching resources colloquium.
President (and treasurer), currently held by: Mary Haman; mkh143@psu.edu
Manage the checking account, grad forum membership dues, make cubicle assignments, manage officer elections, assist with fundraising and other departmental activities as necessary, represent the graduate students as a whole and to outside organizations like UPAC, organize meetings with the Department Head and Grad Officer.
