GRAD FORUM OFFICERS
In short, Grad Forum officers take on the tasks that help the graduate students as a collective. More specifically:
Service Coordinator, currently held by: Toni Gibson; tlg5004@psu.edu
Coordinates annual service projects (blood drive, yard sale, bell ringing/adopt-a-family, foods and goods drives, and any additional service projects that arise). Maintains the grad student listserv for those interested in participating in projects.
Technology Committee Representative, currently held by: Chris Toutain; cmt218@psu.edu
Maintains the Angel site and the grad student listserv. Meets periodically with the faculty technology committee, representing the technology needs of the graduate community. Also, obtains and updates information for graduate student profiles on CAS webpage. Interest and/or proficiency in issues concerning technology is a plus, but not a requirement.
Professional Development Chair, currently held by: Sara Ann Mehltretter (SAM); sam536@psu.edu
Keeps an eye and ear out for job openings and posts them in the job binder in 316 and on Angel. Responsible for filing job search information in the appropriate binder in the office. Schedules at least one colloquium or similar activity (i.e. mock interviews) per year that pertains to professional development issues. Posts notices of upcoming conferences and submission deadlines. Prepares and distributes conference guides to graduate students and prepares and distributes a list of department NCA presenters prior to the November conference.
Intellectual Concerns Chair, currently held by: Eric Miller; ecm192@psu.edu
Assists the faculty who is in charge of planning colloquium events by sending out the weekly reminder, prepares the technology for the presentation (if necessary), and serves as a liaison between graduate students and the faculty regarding colloquium, among others. Keeps track of lectures and talks across the university and post a weekly/monthly list in the office and/or to the Angel group. Presence at colloquium is a requirement for the position.
Social Chair, currently held by: Diana Schroeder; dls489@psu.edu
Organizes weekly social activities in conjunction with colloquium and other social events as needed including crafting and sending evites/invitations. Organizes "automatic friends" and helps coordinate events for new graduate students in the fall. Also, serves on Recruitment Weekend Committee.
Advisory Committee Representative, currently held by: Andy High & Hillary Jones; ach201@psu.edu and haj120@psu.edu
Attends committee meetings and faculty meetings, reports minutes of those meeting to grad forum as appropriate, assist committee in information-gathering, and provides committee with graduate student perspectives on items of discussion. (The Advisory Committee meets as needed to provide advice on issues to the Department Head).
Grad Relations Representative, currently held by: Una Kimokeo-Goes; uhk100@psu.edu
Attends committee meetings and faculty meetings and reports minutes of these meetings to grad forum as appropriate, assists committee in information-gathering, and provides committee with graduate student perspectives on items of discussion. Helps the graduate officer with recruiting at NCA, serves on Recruitment Weekend Committee and assists with planning recruitment weekend, and compiles and distributes welcome packets (early summer) for incoming students. Along with the President, acts as a contact between incoming students and the department during the summer, be available to meet with incoming students during the summer when they come to town, and answers emails from them.
Teaching Resources Representative, currently held by: Holly Gates; hag144@psu.edu
Accumulates teaching resources (sample syllabi, assignments, grading sheets, activities) and organizes them in the Angel folders. Knowledgeable on issues of pedagogy and classroom management. May coordinate teaching mentors for all courses (not just 100A). Meets with department head and associate head concerning teaching issues and policies as necessary. Organizes a teaching resources colloquium at least once a year.
President (and treasurer), currently held by: Mia Briceño; mub129@psu.edu
Manages the checking account, grad forum membership dues, officer elections officer, graduate student office space and supplies, makes cubicle assignments, and serves on Recruitment Weekend Committee. Along with the Grad Relations position, acts as a contact between incoming students and the department during the summer, be available to meet with incoming students during the summer when they come to town, and answers emails from them. Assists with fundraising and other departmental activities as necessary, represent the graduate students as a whole and to outside organizations like UPAC. Meets with department head and graduate officer concerning graduate student issues as necessary.
