Specialized Training

You have an opportunity to enrich your training in methods of scholarly inquiry with support provided by an Specialized Training Award for up to $1500.  Eligibility is limited to two awards overall, but only one in a given Academic Year.  To be considered requires that you:

1.  provide a brief description of the activity in which you wish to participate and a statement concerning how it will enhance your scholarly capabilities for pursuing your research program (one page);
2. attach a description of the program, the amount you are requesting, and other evidence justifying the need for financial support to complete the proposed training (maximum of two pages); and
3. include a letter of support from your academic advisor.

Applications may be submitted any time during the Academic Year.  If you decide to apply, you should place the materials noted in Dr. Gouran's mailbox.  No electronic submissions, please.  Allow two-weeks for a decision.

Examples of specialized training in Rhetoric potentially fundable via this award include: instruction in a foreign  or programming language; taking part in symposia or institutes focusing on advanced research methods; visits to study informally with scholars at other institutions whose work offers significant models of theoretical or critical innovation; and visits to archives for training in archival methods.

Examples relating to Communication Science include: instruction in the collection of biospecimens; attendance at a methods training workshop; participation in a campus intensive training program in research methods; and visits to other institutions to meet with scholars whose work offers useful models of research methods.

Caveat: The funds will be deposited directly into you student (bursar) account. This may have an effect on your student loans or other financial aid. If you have an outstanding balance against PSU, the funds will automatically go toward the satisfaction of that debt. These are things that we have no control over. But, please be advised of them and behave proactively.
