CAS 083S - The Dark Side of Interpersonal Communication

The purpose of this course is to provide insight into recent and noteworthy social scientific scholarship regarding the “dark side” of interpersonal/relational communication.  This course will highlight four main areas of the dark side of interpersonal communication, including (1) aspects of communication that are typically seen as dysfunctional, problematic, and destructive; (2) aspects of the communication that are understudied or poorly understood, (3) aspects of communication that appear to be negative but also serve a function or produce desirable outcomes; and (4) those aspects of communication that are presumed to be good that actually can produce harmful or undesirable outcomes.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course, students should have a critical understanding of dysfunctional communication, recognition of problematic behaviors that emerge in their own lives, and the skill set to direct conversation in a more positive or healthy manner.
