RESEARCH ACTIVITIES AND INTERESTS:

My primary research and teaching interests include the history of rhetorical theory, rhetorical criticism, and the philosophy of rhetoric. I specialize in the early development of Greek rhetoric and philosophy, communication ethics, and rhetorical epistemology. Current research activities include a study of the role of speech and language in the transition from mythology to naturalistic cosmology in early Greek thought and an examination of the role of communication in the moral development of individuals and communities.

I currently serve as Basic Course Director and as chair of the College committee that oversees Penn State's study abroad program in Athens, Greece. I also regularly serve as Faculty Director of the Athens Program (1991, 1997, 2002, planned 2007).
